Abstract

Chromosome. numbers are reported for 20 species of subtropical Argentine grasses. First chromosome counts are given for the following seven species: Bambusa chacoensis, 2n = 46-; B. paraguayana, 2n = 46; Bromus brachyanthera, 2n = 42; Melica argyrea, 2n = 18; Paspalum conspersum, 2n = 60; P. hydrophilum, 2n = 40 and P. indecoruim, 2n = 20. Reports that differ from the previous counts for the same taxon are given for Lithachne pauciflora, Hypogynium virgatum (=H. spathíflorum) and P. cromyorrhízon. In addition, aberrant microspore tetrads, including linear, T-shaped and intermediate forms , are reported for Bromus brachyanthera and Erfochloa punctata.
